Businessmen of the country hope that the government will adopt a number of documents regulating more stringent requirements for the use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine and help to introduce a high-quality surveillance system, says Dmitry Kirilyuk, coordinator of the Committee of Veterinary Drug Manufacturers of the European Business Association.
Most modern livestock farms today use antibiotics on an ongoing basis during livestock feeding. On an industrial scale, animals are kept in large numbers in one room. So, in one house can be several tens of thousands of chickens. From this perspective, the use of antibiotics reduces the risk of morbidity. If the disease is detected, then the room will need to be isolated, and livestock products during treatment cannot be sold.
At the same time, before using antibiotics, farm veterinarians analyze animals' sensitivity to drugs. Often, such a check shows that animals are not sensitive to most antibiotics, and this is a serious problem for the livestock industry. Given current legislation, we can say that antibiotics are so widely used because other medicines are too expensive or not allowed in Ukraine .Ukrainian business supports the need to strengthen control over the use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine. But this control should not stop at prohibitions and strengthening of administrative pressure. It is necessary to allow the use of autogenous preparations in Ukraine.
On March 7 this year, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the National Plan of Action to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance, which provides for the regulation of antibiotic turnover in Ukraine.
