22 tons of Turkish tomatoes infected with a quarantine organism were not allowed for sale on the Ukrainian market. On May 23 of this year, a quarantine organism, a South American tomato moth (Tuta absoluta Meyr), was detected in a cargo of foreign vegetables in the Cherkasy region.
Specialists of the state inspection during phytosanitary control of regulatory objects in PFK Umansky in the territory of Cherkasy region found a dangerous pest in tomatoes from Turkey.
As phytosanitary measures, the infected vegetables were returned to the sending country - Turkey. To prevent similar incidents from happening in the future, Turkey will be sent documents on the non-compliance of the cargo with phytosanitary requirements of Ukraine.
For information, tomato moth is considered a very dangerous quarantine insect around the world. Under acceptable climatic conditions and in the absence of natural entomophages, it can damage 100% of the tomato crop.
The system of strict measures to suppress the spread of this quarantine organism at the moment cannot provide complete safety against the pest.
