For decades, the waste from sugar production in the Gnidavskiy plant was given to feed pigs and cows. And today it is a valuable raw material from which the BIO TEK enterprise produces a strategically important product for Ukraine - bioethanol.
Lutsk plant is the first private enterprise that produces bioethanol. In Ukraine there are several more similar plants, but they are state-owned and operate on the basis of distilleries.
“This idea came up in order to improve the profitability of the sugar factory. After making sugar, molasses remained. Partially, we sold it to farmers for feed to pigs and cows, and part of us began to buy from other countries for the production of bioethanol. Why not produce it yourself? Now we not only make full use of our molasses, but also take them from other sugar factories: from Radekhovsky, Maryanovsky, ”says Alexander Ksenzhuk, director of BIO TEK.
Bioethanol, which is produced at the enterprise, is sold to the chemical industry and to Ukrainian gasoline producers (among the buyers are Ukrnafta and BRSM). In gasoline, which is refueled by Ukrainian cars, should be 5% bioethanol. This is the legislative requirement approved in 2017.
Bioethanol reduces the amount of harmful emissions, and also reduces the need for oil, which is not cheap and not its own, imported. In the USA, for example, bioethanol in fuel should be up to 30%, in Europe - 5-10%, and in Brazil cars are generally refueling with bioethanol only.
Ukraine will also increase the content of bioethanol, which is called the fuel of the future. This will reduce Ukraine’s dependence on imported oil and reduce the environmental impact.Next, the following steps are planned to reduce waste and energy consumption: the production of biogas and even electricity. And at the Gnidavsky sugar plant itself, they are working to reduce emissions from filtration fields with the prospect of switching to a closed production cycle.
