The leader of the Social Democratic and Labor Party of Great Britain and candidate for the European Parliament Colum Eastwood met with farmers, small enterprises and representatives of the agricultural sector at the Balmoral Show.
Speaking after his visit, Eastwood said that it would be best for the interests of the agricultural sector to “remain in the European Union,” and that it was here that politicians should “stand up” for the sector.
He also added: “The Balmoral Show is one of the most vibrant agricultural events of the year in Northern Ireland. We celebrate the strength of our agricultural sector and the unique products that we have throughout the North.
This year, of course, the show's participants were more than ever worried about the increased uncertainty after the UK vote to leave the European Union.
Farmers, small businesses and those across the agricultural sector are deeply concerned about what Brexit will mean for their industries, their livelihoods and, in turn, for our local economy. It’s clear that staying in the EU is the best way to protect the interests of the agricultural sector. ”
