This year there is a high probability of the spread of apple scab throughout Ukraine. The alarming data were obtained as a result of a survey of apple orchards by the NAAS Institute of Horticulture.
Scientists advise enhancing the fungicidal protection of apples and pears, special attention should be paid to timely spraying. In 2018, the manifestations of the disease were seen on leaves in May-June, on fruits in late June and early July, the Institute of Horticulture emphasized. In most regions of Ukraine, the scab has not acquired the character of mass epiphytotic distribution. Leaf damage on average ranged from 3-10% with a disease development level of 1-7%.
A more severe scab lesion was observed in Zaporizhia, Kirovograd, Donetsk, Nikolaev, Ternopol, Volyn, Chernihiv and Ivano-Frankivsk regions. Here, the disease captured 12-15%, the leaf level of the disease reached 5-13%.The development of the disease at the level of 15-25% and fruit damage at the level of 25-55% were detected in the Khmelnitsky, Cherkasy, Donetsk, Volyn and Ivano-Frankivsk regions. Pear scab was found only in the Kherson region. 5% of leaves were affected, 2% of fruits were affected with the development of the disease at the levels of 1% and 0.2%. In autumn 2018, a significant amount of wintering scab causing fungus was found on the fallen leaves of the apple tree, and on the affected shoots of the pear.
