Specialists of one of the leading Canadian centers for genetic selection, working on new varieties of sweet potato (sweet potato), put a priority on the adaptation factor.
In other words, they intended to develop a type of sweet potato that would be conveniently grown directly in climatic conditions and on the most common soil types in Canada.
The goal that the breeders pursued was to create a high-yielding sweet potato variety that allowed them to abandon imports and rely only on their own sweet potato resources.
As a result, it was possible to develop such a root crop, which, to all other characteristics. Also demonstrated the ability to early ripening.
“Previously, Canadians were mostly forced to buy yam, which is cultivated in the southern states of America. These were long-season varieties that did not fit our climate with a short period of heat, ”say scientists from the Ontario genetic selection center.
Last year, our country imported about seventy-two thousand metric tons from the United States. However, this year the situation will change dramatically! ”
Breeders called their invention “radiance”. The variety was the result of three years of painstaking work and is already successfully grown on the experimental fields of Canada.
In the near future, the creators of the new sweet potato assure, sweet potatoes will go to the gardens of Canadian farmers en masse - both professionals working on an industrial scale, and amateurs.
