The consumption of nuts in Ukraine is very meager. Of the annual 100 thousand tons of crops in the domestic market, only 15-25% remains, Zakhar Kurganov, who has worked as an agronomist in a large walnut garden in the Nikolaev region for several years, shares information.
According to him, in different ways Ukrainian nuts fall on the shelves of European outlets. But they find themselves there not directly from Ukraine, but by re-export from Moldova, Turkey and Romania.
“Buyers buy and sell it there with gray schemes. The best nut gets there, low-quality goes to the confectionery industry,” says Zakhar Kurganov.
The expert notes that walnut is mainly grown from walnut crops in Ukraine. There are also hazelnut and almond plantations. Ukrainian farmers also grow pistachios, but this is already a nut for a tropical climate.
It was previously reported that the world leadership in exporting quality nuts of all kinds belongs to the United States of America. This country is also a leader in the marketing of nuts. It is in the USA that the main global nut trends are formed. Ukrainian nut producers are invited to a training conference in California, which will be held July 27 to August 3, 2019.
